Eligible graduate students may be awarded federal student loans and work-study in addition to departmental awards and fellowships.
Financial aid awards from the UC Berkeley International Office consist of individual grants applied directly to tuition and fees via the UC Berkeley student records system. Award amounts vary depending on the number of applicants and levels of need per semester. Grants do not need to be repaid.
Financial Aid Guidelines. We suggest that you complete the FAFSA even if you are not sure you will need or want any aid from the UC Berkeley Financial Aid Office. You can decide later whether to accept aid for which you are eligible. Please note: Graduate students are considered independent; parent information should not be included on your FAFSA.

The Department pledges incoming PhD students sufficient financial support so that they have funding for at least 5.
Graduate students with a work-study award as part of their financial aid package from the Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office can apply for work-study jobs. Students who do not have work-study but do have financial need (currently receiving student loans) may also convert unpaid need-based loans to work-study.

Applications for room and board financial aid are available to graduate or upper division UC Berkeley degree-registered international students, U.S. citizens, and permanent residents who have demonstrated financial need and have a room reservation to reside at International House for the coordinated term.
GRADUATE Graduate Funding. Astronomy graduate students are provided financial assistance in the forms of fellowships, teaching positions, and research appointments. This support is meant to cover costs such as registration costs (all fees and nonresident supplemental tuition) and provides a stipend for living expenses while attending Berkeley.
